As we slowly move into the summer months, we should remind ourselves that with the warmer weather comes high season for ticks!
Ticks are small, blood-sucking arachnids. They range in size from as small as a pin’s head to as large as a pencil rubber. When bitten by a tick you probably won’t feel the tick biting you as it is occurring, you will notice afterwards when you find it embedded in your skin.
Most harmless tick bites cause no physical signs or symptoms. Some cause a red or discoloured bump to appear that looks similar to a mosquito bite; however ticks can pass potentially severe diseases to humans, the most commonly Lyme disease. Untreated Lyme disease can produce a wide range of symptoms, depending on the stage of infection. These include fever, rash, facial paralysis, and arthritis.
Ticks are attracted to people and their four-legged pets. If you’ve spent a lot of time outdoors, you have likely encountered ticks at some point.

How to avoid tick bites
To reduce the chance of being bitten (from NHS.uk):
- cover your skin while walking outdoors and tuck your trousers into your socks
- use insect repellent on your clothes and skin
- stay on clear paths whenever possible
- wear light-coloured clothing so ticks are easier to see and brush off

What is Permethrin?
A synthetic pyrethroid, a naturally occurring insecticide found in chrysanths. Permethrin has been used since the 1960s as crop protection in the cultivation of cotton, and as a medication, it is used to treat lice.
What effect does the treatment have on a tick?
As Permethrin is a contact insecticide, it causes a Hot-Feet effect on insects, causing them to leave the treated substance as quickly as possible. If the insect is forced to remain on the treated fabric, confusion and backing occurs after a short time, followed by death.
Is Permethrin safe for humans?
Permethrin can be harmful to humans but not in the small amounts that are used in Rovince ZECK-Protec clothing. For the quantity of Permethrin to be considered harmful to humans, the wearer would need to sport a complete Rovince outfit (socks, trousers, and top) for 60 hours a day.
